    • The Schunke children walked to Dornbock each day of school. It had not church, and was on the Prussian side of the border their property was on. Later William wrote his parents had the "rudeness" to send him to school at the age of four years and two months. He displayed the ability and readiness to learn, so was sent to school at this very early age. His parents tied a bouquet of flowers on his left arm and he was given a bag of candy, and his sister Analiza took him into the village school. He was enrolled with two other boys that were two years older than William and a great deal bigger. Together the three formed the class all by themselves for four years. William never lagged behind the two other boys and achieved more than they did, which was a source of pride for him. William gave the bag of candy to the teacher, who ceremoniously returned it to William.

    New Building
    • William was the pastor of the German Baptist Church in town. Gustav and William had been very close, had come to the United States together, and were together again. William was married, and soon afterward was very thankful Gustav was there to help him with a dilemma of building a new church building.

The church was meeting in a rather non-descript wooden box, that was impossible to clean, and easy to pass by without noticing. A committee at the church had determined the best thing to do was not to try to raise money for minimal repairs, which were going to be major, but instead to build a new building. William was made supervisor of the project, and it was a highly challenging endeavor.

The church had a piece of land on the river, close to the mouth of it on Michigan Lake. The problem was the land had a heavy slope to it. The two brothers worked tirelessly, seeking a solution, and after countless measurements, they were able to work out a plan.

The project came together rapidly after that. The project was approved and funds were raised. They had a basement for the Sunday School and made the building from red brick. The building was completed and they held their first services there at the beginning of September. To the surprise of all, the building was not only fully paid off on opening day, they had $200 left over! God had been good, and His servants had worked diligently.

William left the pastorate there in 1880 and went to Chicago for a year, and then went to Iowa.

Gustav stayed in Racine untill 1900, and they gave birth to four children in Racine.
