- Bethany Baptist Church was the first church west of the Rockies of the North American Baptist Convention. It was a German speaking church, and started in 1875. William Schunke, Lil's father, pastored the church, and Ben Croeni's father also served as pastor. The two "pastor's kids" met as one family was leaving and the other coming to pastor the church.
Lil, a "grandmother" figure, was a large, jovial and hard-working farm wife. She had a beautiful singing voice and played the organ well. The Church was not far from their house.

- Bethany Baptist Church built their third worship sanctuary in a Spanish style in 1928 at a cost of $20,000. Mr. Carl Eggiman was one of the main leaders to push the purchase of a pipe organ for the building, and Ben and Lil Croeni were major contributors. A Guenther organ was installed in the church building in 1929 for $5,000. Lil was the Church organist.
