Legacy Woes

We have supported and encouraged several to buy Legacy Family Tree Software much to our shame. We have started a list of the problems that we have experienced and now long endured as an avid user of the software. Of course in listing these complaints we hope there will be pressure applied on the publisher and developer to get back to making the software worth its place among genealogy software.

We are ashamed to admit we have too much invested to simply move to another software system at this point. We are working to shift things away from Legacy Family Tree Software, but have not dedicated the two weeks it will take to do so. There is so much we need to do to keep up with correspondence and research, we just do not have the time.

Legacy has dominated the search engines with lots of fluff from their website, so it is hard to get any serious ranking as a critic. However, time may change that, if enough people find out about our little blog entries.

We have assembled this page to help users find our posts on the subject. Please feel free to comment on them and make links to them! It is time that Legacy Family Tree Software take their users seriously!

  • Legacy to Rootsmagic Woe I was stumbling around digging up lost files and came across this list. It was made during the time I was converting the data from Legacy Family Tree to RootsMagic. It probably goes without saying, but the process took weeks to do. It is not at all smooth, because the two programs operate on totally different ...
  • MS Access and Legacy Family Tree I’m sitting here waiting for Microsoft Access to finish rebuilding my Legacy Family Tree database again. It is so sad. I thought I had gotten a great deal when I paid for Legacy Family Tree Deluxe, but what I did not know was that I also would have to have own Microsoft Access as well ...
  • Insuficient Resources? My ire toward Legacy Family Tree software continues unabated. I have tried to calm myself down by: Realizing they are marketing to the multitudes that want to stick their toe into their little family tree but do not want to to pursue it seriously. Thus all the videos and cruises. It is just a party atmosphere ...
  • Legacy Source Memory Missing The title is pretty misleading, but I did not figure out a succinct title to use  about this problem! What happens is that when you go to search through the source titles, like for a census, you type out quite a bit of the title of the source, only to find it is missing. Now you ...
  • Legacy Deletes Location Notes Well, it just happened again! An age old problem that keeps haunting me everywhere I go and year after year. Here’s what happens! Description First, I begin by making a new location, and get things all set up and proper. I even add extensive notes to the new location and then go to save it, and my ...
  • Legacy Gripes Continued No spell checker and no grammar check for location notes. Adding a new source does not reset the source list to include the new source over half the time. Source details do not tab through the scrolled fields, forcing the user to have to scroll down to enter data. Export settings are not remembered, nor are the Gedcom ...
  • Legacy 8 review Well, the day finally arrived, years after we expected to see it, but version 8 of the Legacy Family Tree has been released! My biggest fear was that the old way of doing things would be completely gone and that there would be a totally redone and updated core to the software. The good news is it ...
  • Cancel Button location gripe I have been too sick to bother griping about Legacy Family Tree software lately, but having said some nice things about them, now it is time to fuss! I really hate it when I come to the end of entering all the data and link for a photo and then accidentally hit the cancel button instead ...
  • Legacy FT place names merge fixed I had a pleasant surprise today. I was able to get into the tables of the locations and so different sorts to find problematic data that is not allowed in Legacy Family Tree software. The results were wonderful. I was able to do a simple sort and find the locations that had not been verified! ...
  • Legacy & Family Search Locations Warning I have enjoyed the efforts of the Mormon church to try to fix a reputation problem their family trees have had for several years. The work is mostly trash, and accuracy seems the last thing considered by most of them. Ancestry has followed suit, so its trees also have to be carefully considered before use. How ...
